Frequently asked questions about Legwear
An overview of the main types of legwear:
- Tights: one piece from toe to waist, in various weights (denier)
- Stockings: separate pieces per leg, reaching mid-thigh. Worn with a suspender belt
- Stay-ups (hold-ups): stockings with a silicone band at the top that stay up on their own, no suspender belt needed
- Over-the-knee socks: reach above the knee, in styles from knitted to lace
- Fishnet stockings: open mesh in fine, medium, or large net
- Leg warmers: loose, often knitted, without a foot section
Each type creates a different effect for your outfit and occasion.
Size depends on your height and weight (for tights) or your thigh circumference (for stockings and stay-ups):
| Tights size | Height (cm) | Weight (kg) |
|---|---|---|
| S | 150โ165 | 45โ60 |
| M | 155โ175 | 55โ70 |
| L | 165โ180 | 65โ85 |
| XL | 170โ185 | 80โ100 |
For stockings and stay-ups, thigh circumference matters most โ measure the widest point of your thigh. The silicone band of stay-ups should grip firmly but comfortably.
When in doubt, go one size up. Legwear that is too small tears faster and feels uncomfortable.
Both are stockings that reach the thigh, but they stay up differently:
- Stay-ups have a silicone band on the inside of the top. They stay up on their own, no extra accessories needed. Practical for everyday wear
- Suspender stockings attach to a suspender belt (a separate accessory around the waist/hips) with clips. They have no silicone band
Stay-ups pros: simple, no extra accessory, suitable under fitted clothing
Suspender stockings pros: never slip (the belt holds them), classic lingerie look, popular with a corset
Stay-ups that slip are the most common issue. Solutions:
- Clean, dry skin: body lotion, oil, or sweat reduces the silicone grip. Avoid moisturiser on your thighs when wearing stay-ups
- Correct size: stay-ups that are too large lack tension. Measure your thigh and check the size chart
- Keep the silicone band clean: wash it regularly with lukewarm water โ dirt reduces adhesion
- Avoid repeated pulling on and off: each time, the silicone loses some grip
- Suspender belt as backup: for long wear or lots of movement, suspender stockings are a more reliable choice
